History of colonic irrigation

The first mention of colonics can be traced back to the Egyptians around 1700 BC. It's not just the Egyptians, you can find references that Greeks, Romans, Indians and Africans used colonics.

The enema syringe was invented around 980 AD. In medieval times the preferred method was a tube made of bone, reed or metal to connect to a sleeve or animal bladder called the “clyster purse”. In Africa, enemas were administered by the use of a calabash filled with water. The practice continued through the ages but came back to prominence in France in the 17th Century. It was very fashionable for a Parisienne to have as many as 3 enemas a day. The belief being that internal washing was essential for an individual’s well-being. Elite and the wealthy had a selection of syringes made from pearl and silver. Louis XIV (The Sun King) is purported to have had as many as 2000 enemas during his life as king.

Towards the end of the 19th Century the use of colonics and enemas slowly dwindled due to the increase use of other forms of commercial laxatives. In 1917, Dr Kellog promoted the use of colonics, he believed in the use of colonics over surgery to correct gastrointestinal diseases. Since then many books have been written and published on the subject.

FAQs

What happens during a colonic?

A case history is taken, and the procedure is explained on your first appointment. The appointment lasts for 1 hour and 15 minutes and the treatment lasts up to 45 minutes. A disposable speculum is inserted into the rectum which is connected to a plastic hose and warm filtered water is gently introduced into the colon from a closed gravity system. Abdominal massage is used to stimulate the release of stored matter. Your modesty is preserved at all times. Enema herbs may also be used during the treatment.

Is it painful?

No. Sometimes during a colonic the colon will contract and expel large amounts of matter causing cramping and a feeling of urgency, these sensations are tolerable and brief. Many people enjoy the sensation and feel relieved, cleaner and lighter afterward.

Is it safe?

Not only is it safe but also beneficial. All equipment is either disposed or sterilised using an ARCH approved sterilising solution. The water is filtered and introduced under low pressure; there is no danger of bowel perforation.

How will I benefit?

The colon is the waste bin of the digestive tract and few people clear it regularly, ideally two to three times per day. Irregular emptying can lead to decay, stagnation and formation of bad bacteria. It can also lead to high toxin levels within the body, halitosis, (bad breath) irritability, low energy levels and low mood. Colonic irrigation helps unload the toxins and cleanses the colon.

How is a colonic helpful?

During colonic irrigation the muscle action improves, the pockets are emptied, and the colon begins to exercise and work efficiently. It allows this large muscle to return to its original form. The transit time of waste matter improves, and nutrients are readily and naturally absorbed through the bowel wall.

How many treatments will I need?

Your therapist will assess and advise you after your initial treatment on frequency and follow-up to maintain a healthy state.
